"The concept of a musical nocturne was popularized in the first half of the nineteenth century by Polish composer and pianist, Frédéric Chopin, but that visual artists have been painting night images since the early 1300s," said Dr. Butera.

"In the show, thirty-three works in all different media by nineteen New Jersey and New York contemporary artists sometimes acknowledge earlier visual precedents such as those by James Whistler, Vincent van Gogh and Georgia O'Keeffe, but they also reveal new approaches to the theme in keeping with twenty-first century life and culture."

The artists explore various subjects that include women and the moon, the cosmos, midnight activities by animals and insects and natural and artificial light in locations as diverse as New York City, Paris and the ocean. These approaches show the night to be actually and conceptually filled with magic, mystery, desire, dreams, destruction and/or death within the paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs and mixed media collages that are on view.
