The College of Saint Elizabeth (CSE) professor and best-selling author, Dr. Mary Chayko, will be the keynote speaker with her address entitled, “Time, Space, Technology, and Togetherness” at The Media and History Conference, held at Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City, N.J., on Thursday, April 12, 2012, beginning at noon.
Dr. Mary Chayko, professor and chair of the sociology program at CSE, is the best-selling author of Portable Communities: The Social Dynamics of Online and Mobile Connectedness (SUNY Press). In 2009, it was ranked sixth on the top 20 best sellers list in the social sciences by the Library Journal and recognized by the Association of Humanist Sociology at their annual meeting as Book-of-the-Year runner-up.
Her latest co-authored publication, Pioneers of Public Sociology: 30 Years of Humanity and Society (Sloan Publishing), has expanded her literary list with anthology authorship. Through partnering 25 articles, many taken from the journal Humanity and Society, with a contemporary rejoinder or update, she was able to illustrate a correlation in relevance of today’s issues to those journals reviewed by authors during three decades.
Says Dr. Chayko, “I strongly believe that sociology is something people do and not just study. Sociology is a life skill, not a list of vocabulary words to be learned. It is a way of taking action to make people’s lives better.”
