Residence Hall Connection

Residence Hall Technology Services

The College provides resident students with access to the Campus network, the Internet, cable-TV services, and the telephone services. All dorm rooms in Founders Hall and O'Connor Hall have Wi-Fi access. Each dorm room will have a network wiring box mounted on the wall that has the following port layout.

If you are assigned Founders Hall, 211A, you would plug your personal touch-tone phone into the top left jack and your computer CAT5 Ethernet cable (i.e., computer network cable) into the bottom left jack. If you are 211B then you would use the respective jacks on the right hand side of the box.

Useful items to bring with you to campus:

• Computer with a 10/100 network interface card
• Category 5e (CAT5e) Ethernet cable for your computer
• Standard touch tone phone
• Coaxial cable for your TV
• Power strip / surge suppressor
• Lock for your laptop (protect your investment!)

Please view the Minimum Computer Requirements Table to verify if your machine is compatible with the college's network. Residents will also need to purchase a Category-5 Ethernet Patch Cord of sufficient length to connect your computer to the wall jack (also available in the CSE Bookstore).

The following instructions assume that your network card has been properly installed and driver software has been loaded and configured correctly. If you are using a Macintosh system, first follow the manufacturer's instructions. You may also call the help desk for assistance.

Instructions for Windows XP

The following instructions are for Windows XP equipped machines

Step 1

1. Right Click on Internet Explorer and select "Properties"
2. On the Connections Tab choose setup - this will start the connection Wizard
3. Choose ‘Connect to the Internet', Click Next
4. Choose ‘Setup my connection manually', Click Next
5. Choose ‘Connect using a broadband connection that is always on', Click next
6. Click Finish

Step 2

1. Click Start, Control Panel, and Open Network Connections
2. Right Click once on Local Area Connection, Select Properties
   Note: The needed services are usually already installed by the manufacturer. If you need to install a services,refer to the installation procedures in your computer's manual.
3. Double Click to open TCP/IP
4. Choose obtain an IP automatically
5. Choose obtain DNS server address automatically
6. Click OK to close the window
7. Again Click OK to close the window

Step 3

1. Restart your computer
2. Double click Internet Explorer to connect
3. For help, call the Help Desk on Ext 4015
