Performs duties under the general supervision of the Director of Network Operations and work independently to support and maintain the College systems/networking infrastructure, server applications and telephone/voice services.
The Systems Engineer is expected to perform daily and routine tasks with a minimum of supervision. Initiative, creativity and decision making are required. The attendance of internal and external training sessions and meetings are directed and necessary for job performance is required.
In certain circumstances, may perform end user training on various information technology systems and application use.
Requisite qualifications include a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Electrical/Computer Engineering, or Telecommunications; three years technical experience in managing server hardware and software; one year’s experience in managing voice/telephone systems, or equivalent combination of work experience as determined by the Director of Network Operations and the Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
Any Microsoft, Cisco, Redhat, VMware, Citrix certification is a plus, but is not required.
A strong understanding of server hardware, Windows Server 2003 /2008, Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, mail services, and enterprise antivirus services is required. Up-To-Date knowledge of Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Cluster Technology, Storage Area Networks (SAN), Redhat Enterprise Linux, and VB Scripting in highly desirable.
Will be required to interface with management, members of Academic departments, and other members of the Information Systems department. Must also be open to their suggestions and responsive to their perceptions of the needs of the organization; and flexible and capable of acclimating to diverse situations and personalities.
An ability to interface and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical personnel, administrative users, staff, faculty, and students is very important. Must possess strong analytical skills, excellent oral and written communicative skills, be a quick learner, self-motivated, patient, and be able to work in stressful situations, and at times willing to work flexible hours.
