Dr. Maureen O'Connell is associate professor of theology at Fordham University. Her recent book, "If These Walls Could Talk," explores Philadelphia's community muralism movement. Dr. O'Connell explores the theological and social significance of the 2,800 wall-sized canvases in ghettos, schools, mosques, courthouses and overpasses which are transforming Philadelphia into the "Mural Capital of the World." She explores how the arts can help us think about and create responses to the seemingly inescapable problems of urban poverty. The murals themselves, their creators, and interpreters, together engage beauty in the search for social change.
