NEAC selects CSE senior swimmer Shannon Tipton for Sportsmanship Award

GANSVEROOT, N.Y. – Saint Elizabeth senior Shannon Tipton (Woodbridge, Va. / Mother of Divine Grace) has received the 2012 North Eastern Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award, as announced on Thursday by conference commissioner Candice Poiss Murray.

Tipton, a four-time letter winner on the Screaming Eagles swimming team, joins Kimberly Ochester from Penn State-Abington in receiving the honor.

The student-athletes of the NEAC uphold the responsibility of sportsmanship by demonstrating leadership, positive attitude and respect so that all collegiate participants will maintain the integrity and character of the NEAC. They strive to achieve these ideals through a commitment to fair and honest competition.

Tipton, primarily a distance freestyler on the CSE swimming team and also a member of the CSE tennis and cross-country teams, also received the CSE Sportsmanship Award at the 2012 Athletic Banquet. The Athletics Department determined Tipton displayed consistent sportsmanship at swim meets, on campus and at competing schools. Many competitors, officials and coaches at swim meets have taken notice of her actions, which often involving clapping, cheering, high fives and one big smile – for both her teammates and the opponents.

She also has displayed citizenship outside of athletic competitions. Tipton volunteers her time at Habitat for Humanity, Relay For Life sponsored by the American Cancer Society and Change of Life Uganda: Quarters for Water fundraiser. Tipton, a peer tutor on campus, is actively involved in the Student Government Association, Students Take Action Committee, the Class of 2013, Freshman Advisory Board, Campus Ministry and is a Student Ambassador on campus.

Tipton has made the Dean’s List every semester at Saint Elizabeth and currently holds a 3.87 GPA. She is part of the honors program and received the Elizabethan Scholarship upon arriving at Saint Elizabeth. Her busy days include lifeguard duties and swim instruction, spreading her love for swimming to others, both young and old.

Tipton and her Screaming Eagles teammates open the 2012-13 swimming season on Sat., Nov. 3 at Sarah Lawrence College. The team’s home opener is scheduled for Sat., Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. when NEAC opponent Wells College comes to the St. Joseph’s Hall pool.
