CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – The Wells College women’s swimming and diving team held on to its day-two lead to win the NEAC Swimming and Diving Championship on Sunday with a three-day score of 460.5 at the event, which was hosted by Cazenovia College.
The Express came into the third and final day of competition with just a three-point lead over Cazenovia, 307.5 to 304.5, after both teams were tied at 150 points through day one’s events, but pulled away by winning three (200 Backstroke, 100 Free and 400 Freestyle Relay) of Sunday's six events to capture their first-ever championship.
Finishing in third place was last year’s champion, Gallaudet University, with 404 points, while SUNY Cobleskill placed fourth with 399 points and the College of Saint Elizabeth finished fifth with 262 points.
Gallaudet University’s Alexandra Polivanchuk (Oreboro, Sweden) was named the NEAC Swimmer of the Year after a sensational season in which she was twice named the NEAC Swimming Student-Athlete of the Week. Cazenovia took home the other two conference awards, as freshman Laura Krasniqi (Montrose, N.Y.) was selected as the conference’s inaugural Rookie of the Year and head coach Bill Houser was selected by his peers as the NEAC Coach of the Year.
Multiple NEAC records were broken over the course of the three-day championship event. Those will be posted in full shortly, as will the three All-Conference Teams consisting of the top-three finishers of each event.
