Wrights selected to NEAC Third Team All-Conference

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) has announced its 2012 Women’s Volleyball All-Conference selections, with first, second and third team honors being awarded regardless of position to a total of 21 student-athletes, as selected by the conference coaches.
The NEAC has also announced its individual women’s volleyball award winners. Gallaudet University senior outside hitter Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.) has been selected as the NEAC Player of the Year after a sensational season for the Bison. Whited, a team captain, tallied 345 kills, 363 digs, 54 serve aces, 20 total blocks and 413 points (3.4 p/set) in 35 matches on the season while winning two NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week awards and an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Player of the Week award. Whited was also selected to three separate all-tournament teams on the year and currently ranks in the top five in the conference in kills, points and hitting percentage (.244).
Whited’s teammate, Gallaudet University senior middle hitter Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.), was selected as the NEAC Defensive Player of the Year after a dominating season at the net for the Bison. Israel, also a team captain, currently leads the NEAC in total blocks (98) and assisted blocks (57) while being second in solo blocks (41) and blocks per set (0.82). She was a three-time NEAC Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week selection and twice named to an all-tournament team this past season. Israel also contributed to the offense, as she currently leads the NEAC and is fifth in the nation in hitting percentage (.418) while recording 318 kills on the year.
The NEAC Rookie of the Year honor went to Penn State Abington freshman outside hitter Abby Millan (El Paso, Texas). A two-time NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week selection, Millan currently leads the conference in aces (80), aces per set (0.93) and points per set (4.6) while also registering 307 kills and 275 digs on the season. Her aces per set average currently ranks seventh in the nation across Division III.
Gallaudet University head coach Lynn Ray Boren was selected by his peers as NEAC Coach of the Year after leading his defending-champion Bison to an undefeated season in conference play at 11-0 en route to the NEAC regular season championship. The Bison (29-6 overall) will host the NEAC Championships this Friday, Nov. 2 and Saturday, Nov. 3.
