MORRISTOWN, N.J. -- The Screaming Eagles picked up their first conference win of the season, outlasting the visiting Bison from Gallaudet 3-2 in the first game of a North Eastern Athletic Conference softball twinbill.
CSE (5-4, 1-4 NEAC) dropped the second game of the double header on the sunny, seasonably warm Sunday afternoon at Convent Field, 12-6, to Gallaudet (11-15, 1-5 NEAC).
In the first game of the afternoon, the Bison jumped out to a 2-0 lead highlighted by a two-out RBI single by Kara Gulvas.
The Screaming Eagles immediately answered when first baseman Madellyn Rodriguez cracked a two-run double to left field to drive home Alesandrio De Sapio and Kelly O'Dell.
The game remained tied into extra innings. After the Bison were unable to score in the top of the eighth inning, CSE secured the win in the bottom of the frame when De Sapio's infield hit allowed Katrina Kenny to scamper home from third with the winning run.
Kenny (3-1) earned the win in the pitcher's circle, striking out a pair of batters while allowing just one earned run.
In the second game of the afternoon, De Sapio led the CSE offense with three hits in four at-bats while O'Dell added a pair of doubles with one run scored and an RBI.
The Bison rang up at least three runs in three separate innings to provide enough cushion to earn the split of the NEAC doubleheader.
CSE senior Catherine Eber (2-3) suffered the loss while Gallaudet starter Montana Murphy (6-6) earned the victory.
The Screaming Eagles are back on Convent Field on Tuesday afternoon when Cedar Crest visits for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
