M-Rod drives in three more runs as CSE splits NEAC doubleheader with PSU Harrisburg

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – CSE sophomore Madellyn Rodriguez had two hits and drove in three runs and Alesandria De Sapio added three hits as the Screaming Eagles softball team split a conference doubleheader with visiting Penn State-Harrisburg Saturday afternoon at Convent Field.

CSE (8-12, 3-11 NEAC) won the first game 6-2 and then PSU Harrisburg (11-21, 6-8 NEAC) picked up a 3-2 win to earn the split in game two.

With the Nittany Lions up 2-0 in the third inning of game one, CSE senior Noelle Grande was hit by a pitch to lead off the Screaming Eagles at-bats. Classmate Kelly O’Dell singled to left field. The pair pulled of a double steal with Rodriguez at the plate.

Rodriguez nailed a one-hopper to the PSU Harrisburg third baseman and Grande broke for the plate. The catcher could not handle the wild throw as Grande crossed the plate. O’Dell kept coming from third and crossed the plate before PSU Harrisburg could corral the loose ball.

CSE freshman Ashley Pledger followed with a base hit to left and two batters later Karina Garcia laced an RBI single to center field. Pledger came around to make it 4-2 CSE when the throw from the outfield got away.

Screaming Eagles starting pitcher Garcia (2-2) cruised into the sixth inning before the Nittany Lions loaded the bases. CSE reliever Katrina Kenny came in with two outs and got grounder to short to end the rally.

CSE plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth when Rodriguez drove home Christina Scolaro and Grande with a base hit to left field.

Garcia picked up the win, allowing just two hits over the 5 2/3 innings while Kenny registered her first career save, pitching 1 1/3 perfect innings.

The Screaming Eagles were the first to break through in game two when Valerie Lasko reached on a fielding error and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by O’Dell.

PSU Harrisburg rallied with a pair of unearned runs off CSE starter Kenny in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead.

The Screaming Eagles came back and tied the game in the bottom of fifth when Rodriguez came through in a clutch spot again, lacing a two-out single to center to drive home O’Dell.

Rodriguez now has a team-high 20 RBI on the season.

The Nittany Lions found the winning run in the top of the seventh when Jasmine Yanich walked to lead off the inning and scored on Reiley Loch’s two-out single to center.

Kenny (4-3) suffered the loss for CSE despite striking out three batters over seven innings. Kara Boyd (9-7) picked up the victory for PSU Harrisburg with eight strikeouts.

Saint Elizabeth is on Convent Field on Sunday for another NEAC doubleheader. The Screaming Eagles will host Wilson and first pitch is slated for 12 p.m. The final home games of the season for CSE will be on April 25 when Rutgers Newark is at Convent Field for a 4 p.m. nonconference doubleheader.
