Despite a string effort, the Screaming Eagles dropped a tough conference game to Wells College, 8-7 on Saturday.
The Express from Wells scored the first goal of the game just 3 minutes in to take a 1-0. Despite being held scoreless for almost 15 minutes, Nicole Rios got the Eagles on the board with a goal after a beautiful pass by Kelly O’Dell. The Eagles couldn’t hold the lead for long as Wells scored on a free position goal, giving them a 2-1 lead. Dana Mortensen quickly tied the score up at 2 after scoring a goal at the 11:10 mark. After Wells scored a pair of goals, Mortensen added another goal with just 17 seconds left in the half to cut the lead to 1. The Express managed to add a goal with just 3 seconds remaining, taking a 5-3 lead into the half.
Kelly O’Dell brought the Eagles to within 1 with a goal just 4 minutes into the second half. Wells answered shortly after, scoring a free position goal to take a 6-4 lead. O’Dell added a free position goal of her own just 2 minutes later, cutting the lead to 1. With 16:40 remaining in the game, Christina Rios tied the score up at 6 with a free position goal. Wells pushed ahead with just over 11 minutes remaining, taking a 7-6 lead. After Wells took an 8-6 lead, Dana Mortensen added a free position goal to cut the lead to 1 with 56 seconds remaining. The Eagles were unable to add another goal, dropping the contest 8-7.
The Eagles wore pink socks and shoelaces during the game in honor of breast cancer awareness. The Eagles return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Centenary College to take on the Cyclones at 4 pm.
