Sometimes the road to success has some twists and turns.
In Brazita Dancy’s case, it included a full U-turn. After starting at CSE directly out of Union High School, Union, N.J., in 1991, Dancy, ’08, ’09, changed gears, left CSE, and joined the workforce. Then, more than 10 years later, she realized the importance of a college diploma for career advancement and came back to CSE – switching her major from biology to business, and working hard to graduate with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in five years! All while balancing work, school and family.
“I really needed that degree to advance in my career,” said Dancy. “So when I first went back, I started with a night class, just to get my feet wet. After that successful start, I added more classes.” At the time, she was working two jobs, was married and had a son. She needed flexibility. “Classes at CSE fit perfectly with my life at the time…It couldn’t have been more ideal.”
She also had support from her employer, PSEG. In addition to offering her tuition reimbursement for part of her tuition, she also had an understanding and encouraging boss. With her diploma, she has moved up from a human resources generalist to a senior generalist. “The combined degree program (CSE BS-MS in Management) helped me obtain the knowledge I needed for career advancement…I’m sure it will continue to open even more doors for me.”
The College of Saint Elizabeth remains near and dear to her heart. Her mother helped her choose CSE right out of high school, after visiting and being accepted at New York University. “Saint Elizabeth has been a rewarding experience…It is so intimate that you get to know your professors….I still call and talk to some of them…Here, you’re not just a number.”
