CSE was founded in 1899 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, and our mission today reflects the values they gave us—a moral grounding in our Catholic heritage; an emphasis on critical inquiry in the pursuit of knowledge; and a commitment to civic responsibility and social justice.
From those origins, CSE has built a legacy of providing students with an educational foundation for lives of ethical leadership in a wide range of careers and walks of life. Today women and men of all ages and backgrounds come to CSE from 40 countries around the globe for the College’s challenging academics, supportive learning environment, and close-knit community.

The undergraduate Women’s College enables women to gain the knowledge and experience they need to achieve their full potential academically, personally, spiritually, and professionally.
Flexible coeducational evening, weekend, and online programs leading to a bachelor’s degree meet the needs of adult learners seeking to advance their careers. We also offer a separate undergraduate Day Program for adult women.
Evening, weekend and online master’s and doctoral programs are designed to help men and women advance in high-demand fields and professions.
CSE offers coeducational evening, weekend and online programs leading to certification in counseling, education, health care, management, ministry, nutrition and other fields.
The Mission of the College of Saint Elizabeth, sponsored by the Sisters of Charity, is to be a community of learning in the Catholic liberal arts tradition for students of diverse ages, backgrounds, and cultures.
Characterized by a strong Catholic identity and values, the College is committed to scholarship and critical inquiry. It fosters just and ethical relationships and the promotion of women as full partners in society in all its programs, including those which enroll both women and men.
With quality teaching as a primary activity and the development of leadership in a spirit of service and social responsibility for others, the College promotes a caring, personal environment where students learn by example as well as by participation throughout their educational experience.
The College was first incorporated under New Jersey State laws on May 19, 1900, and the first baccalaureate degrees were granted on June 18, 1903. In 1905 the New York State Board of Regents extended to the College of Saint Elizabeth a formal certificate of registration of its degrees, confirming earlier approval of its programs stated in letters of 1899 and 1901.
In 1917, the Association of American Universities placed the College of Saint Elizabeth in its Approved List of Colleges and Universities, ninety-six in all, seventeen for women, whose graduates were eligible for admission to the graduate schools of the 24 leading universities comprising the membership of the Association. The College was included also in the first published list of accredited colleges issued by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in 1921, and it has continuously maintained such accreditation. The College of Saint Elizabeth, in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act makes information available concerning campus security procedures and campus crime statistics and in the following offices: Admission; Business; Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students; Financial Aid; Registrar.
In accordance with the Student Right-To-Know and Campus Security Act, the College reports the graduation rate of full-time, first-time first-year students who entered in Fall 1996 and subsequent years to all current students by personalized e-mail and to prospective students who request the information. The report is available in the Admission office, Financial Aid office, and in the Registrar’s office.
The College has adopted a policy to comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 which protects the privacy of educational records, establishes the right of students to inspect and review their educational records, and provides guidelines for the correction of that record. The College informs students of their rights under FERPA including the right to prevent disclosure of personally identifiable information.
The College also adheres to the requirements of the Solomon-Pombo Amendment, which allows the United States Military access to college campuses for recruitment. This amendment also allows the military recruiters to student directory information without the student’s prior approval. Students may obtain a Request to Prevent Disclosure of Directory Information Form from the Registrar’s Office. Failure to request the withholding of directory information indicates approval for disclosure.
