The mission of the Mathematics program is to foster the development of mathematical and computer competence of all students at the College of Saint Elizabeth.
The mathematics program is broad, designed to accommodate the diversity of student needs and interests. The student is led to seek an understanding of the place of mathematics in our culture; in particular to appreciate its relationship to the physical and social sciences. The primary goal of the mathematics curriculum is to develop attitudes of mind and analytical skills required for efficient use and understanding of mathematics. All courses attempt to demonstrate the interplay of applications, mathematical problem solving, and theory. Students from a variety of majors choose mathematics courses that enhance their mathematical competency and complement their major field of study. By earning a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics degree, students prepare to pursue their chosen profession with distinction, whether it be graduate study, a career in industry or one in mathematics education.
Students who have had one year of calculus in high school are urged to consult with the Program Chair concerning the possibility of starting the calculus sequence with Mathematics 153 or 253. A minimum prerequisite of two units of high school mathematics, as well as successful completion of basic skills tests, is required for all courses, except Mathematics 096 and 098. A student may not earn credit for both Mathematics 119 and 125. Students should not be enrolled in more than 12 additional credits while enrolled in Mathematics 096 and 098.
In addition to the mathematics core courses, students must choose at least four courses from the following list.
Mathematics majors interested in secondary school teaching are encouraged to pursue the Mathematics Major (Liberal Arts Option) and to include Mathematical Statistics and Geometry in their choice of electives.
Mathematics core courses are required for all students majoring in Mathematics. In addition, the following are required
