After graduating magna cum laude with a double major in Biology and Chemistry, Janet enrolled at the Long Island College of Medicine (SUNY), where she completed her studies in 1948. She practiced Internal Medicine for more than 40 years, until her retirement on January 1, 1992. She served as President of the medical staff at St. Francis Hospital in Jersey City in 1972 and 1973.

Dr. Geraghty-Deutsch was the Medical Director of B.S. Pollak Hospital for Chest Diseases from 1975-1985. In 1982 she became President of the Hudson County Medical Society. Dr. Geraghty-Deutsch has been a member of St. Bridget Church in Jersey City her entire life.

She received the Mother Xavier Award in 1976, and she was the recipient of various honors from the several professional societies to which she belonged. "St. Elizabeth's has always been a most important part of my life. I am ever grateful for the excellent curriculum and to the excellent faculty who taught, encouraged and inspired me."
